“First Sketches” ist das Debütalbum des Pianisten Olivier Antunes, das unter seinem Namen erscheint. Sein Trio umfasst außerdem den Schlagzeuger Morten Lund und Lennart Ginman am Bass; es sind drei der aufregendsten Talente der europäischen Jazzszene. Das Album enthält sieben Originalkompositionen von Antunes, zusammen mit Dave Brubecks Meisterstück „The Duke“ und Wood/ Mellins „My one and only love“ in einem neuen erfrischenden Arrangement. „First Sketches“ beinhaltet alle Zutaten, die man sich für eine moderne Jazzveröffentlichung nur wünschen kann: Eingängige, groovige Themen, lyrische Balladen und kraftvolle Up-Tempo Nummern. Der Sound ist dunkel und von alter Schule, er evoziert die Finesse klassischer Blue Note Aufnahmen. Die Solisteneigenschaften von Herbie Hancock und Bill Evans sind präsent, doch Antunes Interpretation des Pianojazz bleibt persönlich und erfrischend. Zwar wird allen drei Musikern Platz gewährt, um ihre Talente als Solisten herauszustellen, aber in erster Linie zeigt das Album ihre Fähigkeit als Trio zusammen zu spielen und zu swingen. Neben diesem Debütalbum tauchte Antunes auf verschiedenen Alben als Mitspieler an der Seite einer beeindruckenden Schar bedeutender Jazzmusiker auf, etwa Johnny Griffin, N.H.Ø.P., Alex Riel, Mads Vinding, Jesper Thilo und vielen anderen.

First Sketches is the debut album from pianist Olivier Antunes under his own name, whose trio also features drummer Morten Lund and bassist Lennart Ginman; three of the most exciting talents on the European jazz scene.
The album includes 7 original compositions by Antunes along with Dave Brubeck´s masterpiece “The Duke” and Wood/Mellin´s “My one and only love” in a new and refreshing arrangement.
First Sketches has all the ingredients that you could wish for in a modern jazz release: Catchy and groovy themes, lyrical ballad playing and powerful up tempo tunes. The sound is dark and old school and evokes the finesse of the classic Blue note Recordings. The soloistic traits of Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans are present, but Antunes´ take on piano jazz remains personal and fresh. All three players are allowed space to shine as soloists, but the album mainly demonstrates the trio´s ability to play together and most important swing.
Besides this debut album Antunes has appeared on several albums as sideman and Antunes has since played alongside an impressive array of distinguished jazz musicians that includes Johnny Griffin, N.H.Ø.P., Alex Riel, Mads Vinding, Jesper Thilo and many others.
