Jazz History is marked out of great bass players. Some of them are legends, masters, peaceful, extravagant, easy going or even ascetic. Often respected, they are always close to the musicians & partners they are playing with. Stéphane’s first recording, “Esmak” arrived without warning, dark and luminous at the same time, full of inspiration and cool moods. His second release “ Clandestin” confirmed this revelation, white & tragic, filled with graceful sparks and powerful poetry. With this third release, “en apparence...” Mr Bassman Bertrand keeps on surprising us, sharing an adventure with the listeners thanks to tied up melodies and strong rhythms. Stéphane simply prefers to yield to its own tentations with the will to open his heart to the world without thinking of the trend and never renouncing to his attachment. This record is rare because it delivers many different contrasting climates without being demonstrative. The complexity of the whole thing is hidden behind modesty.
