29 Shoes / Liquid Cage / Circle Dance / Mala Dr'ole / As I Wait

Info

« Thanks to a specific way of making, the volume of the head of a vibraphone drumstick can be a ball composed of two distinct spherical segments made of different materials : hemisphere [A] is made of soft rubber and hemisphere [B] is made of hard rubber. Hemisphere [A] has a slightly larger diameter than hemisphere [B], which makes the soft material touch the instrument first at the moment of the impact. The highest the striking force is, the more the soft hemisphere will be crushed to let the hard one have more attack, although keeping a rich and full sound.
Condensed extract of the pattent registered at the INPI by Norbert Lucarain for his drumsticks, presented in manufacturer Pierre-François Resta’s catalog.

An instinctive and gifted musicican, who plays various instruments, Norbert Lucarain played in Julien Lourau’s Groove Gang, Louis Winsberg’s quintet and « Jaleo » before trying new experiences, among others with Corine (from the group « Telephone »). He has also created his own band and divides his time between his trio, his solo performances (concerts and masterclasses) and Thomas Fersen’s tours, as the latter’s regular drummer.

It is actually as a soloist that he presents us his new album “Thèmes à tics” as a tribute to the vibraphone, and, for once in the instrument’s recent history, with a very personal way of playing. He really reinvents the instrument, making his unclassifiable and surprising music even deeper. He takes us to a trip into his imaginary world, between groove and poetry, where harmonies reach the point of weightlessness, and where his very special phrasing flies over lunar tribes. His performances as a soloist are always very refreshing moments of simple happiness, and make us remember that the vibraphone is a firmly modern instrument. An exceptional soloist, an exceptional disc.
