Ursprünglich begann das Benjamin Koppel Quintett 1992 als Quartett, debüttierte 1993 mit einem Album, veröffentlichte später 1998 den erfolgreichen Nachfolger 'Armadillo Race' – und expandierte seitdem zum Quintett. Alle Mitglieder des Quintetts sind bekannte Namen der dänischen Jazzszene und jeder von ihnen verfügt über weitreichende internationale Erfahrung. Es ist ein klassisches Quintettformat mit Benjamin Koppel am Saxophon, Steen Rasmussen an Piano und Hammond Organ, Jonas Westergaard am Double Bass, Jacob Andersen an den Percussions und Frands Rifbjerg an den Drums. Sie entschieden sich nach einer Tour durch Frankreich, Island und den Rest Skandinaviens, zwei Alben mit den Titeln 'Benjamin Koppel Quintet At Large Vol. 1& 2' zu veröffentlichen. Dieses Album umfasst original Jazzkompositionen, die hauptsächlich von Benjamin Koppel geschrieben wurden. Ihr musikalisches Spektrum ist weit und reicht von groovigem, Latin-inspirierten Jazz über Balladen und echten Soul Jazz zu Free Jazz, Samba und Bossa Nova. Es ist gedankenvolle und herausfordernde Musik. Die Stücke sind immer überraschend – gespielt mit echter Jazzseele – und der Spontaneität im Vordergrund.

Benjamin Koppel Quintet started as a quartet in 1992, made its debut with an album in 1993, released the successful album Armadillo Race in 1998 – and has since expanded to a quintet. The members of the quintet are all well established names of the Danish jazz scene and they all have great international experience. It is a classic quintet format with Benjamin Koppel on saxophone, Steen Rasmussen on the piano and Hammond organ, Jonas Westergaard on double bass, Jacob Andersen on percussion and finally the drums played by Frands Rifbjerg. The quintet decided after a tour in France, Iceland and the rest of Scandinavia to release two albums with the title Benjamin Koppel Quintet At Large Vol. 1 & 2. The repertoire of the quintet is interpretations of the classical jazz standard material and original jazz compositions primarily written by Benjamin Koppel. The musical spectre is widely represented from groovy Latin inspired jazz to wonderful ballads through straight soul jazz to free jazz, samba and bossa nova. It is thoughtful and demanding music. The music is always surprising - played with the soul of jazz – and with the spontaneity in front.
