Giving out the result of a search started with Quatuor Margand, by Zao's side and then in Neffesh Music, Yock'o Seffer sees to it that strings are never limited to a mere decorative role: he refuses their being the background on which the soloist will move about and instead gives them a partner's role. Sometimes they can accompany the saxophone, in the sense that hey go the same way, the same pace ; more often, they weave an independant discourse that crosses, catches up, continues or announces the soloist's.
It is in the intertwinement of the parts that Yochk'o Seffer's success is brilliant because these scores in which he asserts himself as a composer do not seek an artificial balance but create an accurate complementarity allowed by the flexibility of a rythm section, the mobility and adaptability of which enhance the saxophone-string orchestra combination
Thus, John Coltrane receives an original tribute that does not boil down to the debt Yochk'o Seffer owes him but is displaying the way that arranger Yochk'o Seffer treats some of his finest themes. A respectful and creative treating, the decisive point of a route at every step of which Yochk'o Seffer was able to mix the founding contribution of Afro-Americans (specially Monk and Coltrane), Europeans (Schönberg and Bartok) and the assertion of an original talent. This String Orchestra shows one of its most gripping facets.
