Rezensionen

American Offbeat magazine

Moving into decidedly funkier realms is another Danish release entitled Get In the Groove. Including many of the Funky New Orleanians personnel (minus the actual New Orleanians), this is mostly a trio outing with Esben Just on keys and vocals, Søren Frost on drums and percussion, and a mystery man named Sp laying down the bass. The opening track is an original entitled "How Can They Be So White and So Funky" which actually does leave the listener asking that exact question. Fans of Jon Cleary and Davell Crawford will be impressed at this trio's ability to play a mean boogie-woogie rhythm and blues, with touches of funk and even some second-line parade thrown in for good measure. While all the players on the album are in top form, it is Esben Just's nimble piano work and aggressive vocals that stand out. Ambitiously taking on the legendary rhythm and blues workout "Tipitina," Just amply displays his talent while paying homage to his heroes across the Atlantic. Longhair and Booker themselves must be happy another is carrying on their legacy even if these cats weren't born on the banks of the Mississippi. Despite their birthplace, these Danish lads can swing.
